Tohicken Creek, Green Monster
Playspot: USA, East Pennsylvania, Tohicken Creek, Green Monster
What's it like
Green Monster is a nice play hole that depends a lot on the water level, at normal levels (1.5ft to 3ft on the bridge gauge) it is medium size, not too deep, etc. At high levels (above 5ft on gauge) the drop that forms the hole, just turns into an enormous hole, that you would probably want to avoid... Not too sticky but pretty bouncy.
There are eddies on both sides, but don't miss them or you would have to get
out of your boat to go back to the hole and this is forbidden. There are no difficulties or dangers
(except in very high water).
Do not get out of your boat on the sides, the land is posted no trespassing.
This is quite annoying if you miss the eddy!
How to get there
From North, take the 611S and turn left onto 413. Make another turn left onto
Stump Road until you get to Ralph Stover State Park.
From South, take 611N and turn right on Stump Road in Plumsteadville. Follow
this until you reach the Ralph Stover State Park.
From there, the put-in is at the right of the rust colored Bridge that crosses
the Tohicken.
You will se the AWA sign on the bridge.
The actual hole itself is a bit further down the river in the center
after the second "big" drop, you'll see everyone there.
Locals
Random trees, paddlers, landowners who don't want you to get out of your boat and forbid step on their land...
Events
There are usually two planned releases on the Tohicken each year, but don't count on them because more often than not, they are cancelled. You'll have to rely on mother nature to paddle this....
