What's it like

The river is split into 4 channels, of which the 2 on surfer's left are of interest. There are 2 small eddies on either side of the river.

The wave closest to the bank is the best one. It is broken and deep enough for cartwheels and blunts above 75cm above the normal level on the phone gauge (see below).

The second section is a sticky hole with closed in sides. It is usually possible to exit by a capsize or loop attempt. This is a better place for cartwheels but it is not suited for beginners.

A swim is not dangerous but it is hard to reach the side. Please don't paddle the weir as it will give a bad reading on the fish counter at the top.

How to get there

Head into Workington on the A66 and you will reach a roundabout. Keep going into Workington and turn right at the traffic lights. Go over a bridge and you will reach a smaller roundabout. Go down the small track/road leading along the river. You will reach the weir after several hundred meters. Park by the large weir but do not run as it has spikes at its base.

Friendly boaters from the northwest. Usually very quiet.

Fishermen will get angry if you try to paddle in the summer.
