Cantabria, Ason - Carasa River, Ola de Carasa
Playspot: Spain, North, Cantabria, Ason - Carasa River, Ola de Carasa
What's it like
This wave forms due to ocean tides on the Ason river, under the bridge at Carasa. The difference in height between the high and low-water determines if there will be a playhole or not. Thus, those days in a month with a higher tidal coefficient (always greater than 90), 3 hours after the high-tide, the wave shows up. It's also stronger and may remain permanent if it rains persistently. You can look up coefficient information on the tidal tables at Santander Port.
When the tide starts lowering, the water accumulated during the high-water at the inland side has to make its way down through the narrow span of the bridge. In the beginning, it forms a smooth "V" followed by a small surfable wave. The "V" starts closing and slowly makes a more playable spot, while the wave on its back disappears. Finally, the "V" closes completely ( "U" ) and the big playhole forms under the bridge.
How to get there
On the motorway E 70 between Bilbao and Santander, take the exit at Adal Treto and once you pass this small town turn right towards Carasa. Continue on this road and just before arriving to Carasa you'll find a cross-road (Carasa - Badames) on a bridge. The wave is under this bridge.
