What's it like
'The Big Wave' is upstream of Deck Popper Wave.
The name is an understatement - it's huge. There are actually 4 waves in succession:
the first is the easiest to get on and the fastest. The last waves are a little
foamy.
The speed of this wave is unreal. The Fraser River flows at a rough 350 cumecs through the canyon. It constricts to about 10 meters wide at the wave. It's fast, furious and bouncy.
The water level is available from the Environment Canada site (go to British Columbia and then choose 'Fraser River at Red Pass'). Somewhere in the range 3.315 - 3.4 is perfect. At 3.315 Deck Popper can be good. Mind that this level is not exact because Red Pass is about 15 kilometers upstream and there are many minor tributaries. It should be close enough though.
How to get there
From Jasper, Alberta head west to Mount Robson, BC (the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies). When you arrive at Robson there is an intersection. If you turn right you'll get to the info center and gas station. If you go left, you can follow a small road for 300 meters, past a campground to a one-lane bridge. Park just before this bridge. This is also your takeout if you want to run the canyon. You can see the wave downstream from the bridge. Upstream is the Fraser Canyon, and Overlander Falls. Some really good pushy whitewater to be had. To run the canyon, drive about 1 kilometer back up the road to Overlander Falls.
To access the spot, cross the bridge you parked just before. Go upstream for about 10 meters. You will see a poor quality trail down to an eddy above the waves. It's actually a surprisingly good put in, especially since it's one of only a couple of access points in the entire canyon. To cycle the wave, you hike back up, back across the bridge.
