Railway Bridge Wave
![]() |
Playspot: CA, BC, Kicking Horse, Railway Bridge Wave. |
What's it like
A double wave forms below the canyon on the lower run of the Kicking Horse river that is worth checking out. The top wave is a diagonal with a curler that goes especially well for right blunts. A couple of metres below it is a the main wave which can develop a large pile. Seems good for the full range of wave moves.
It has a good eddy on river left and a slightly chewier one on the river right that you need to claw up a bit. Nothing too serious below, but it is moving pretty fast if you were to swim.
It seems to work pretty well between 78-80 on the gauge in town (on river right under the bridge near the Petro Canada gas station).
How to get there
To get there head east out of Golden up the highway that goes up the Kicking Horse pass on river right until you get to one of two put ins. Either get in a couple of hundred metres below the chewy fall under the Yoho bridge across the Horse as in Stuart Smith's guidebook and then run the grade 3/4ish canyon down to the 3rd railway bridge.
Or there's a dirt 4WD road on river right halfway up that road that doubles back upstream and leads down to the second railway bridge. Alternatively you can carry upstream for 10 mins on the railway track on river right.
