Playak Weekly Digest - week 37, 2019
Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling news in week 37, 2019.
Brittany Parker I'm in Love
Brittany Parker - A lot has changed in the past couple months, so it might be a good time to check in with all of you. As some of you may know I am going back to Costa Rica very soon. I leave in 10 days for 7 to 8 months. This will be the longest time I’ve spent in a place since probably 2009 or 10. And I’m not nervous. I don’t feel that impeding anxiety that often comes with big commitments. It honestly feels, and my Grandma will hate me for saying this, like I’m going home.
Palm Blogs Jet Ski Surfing in Montreal
Palm Blogs - There are few places in the world that I enjoy surfing as much as at the Lachine rapids in Montreal. Hidden from the city and out in the middle of the St. Lawrence river, three big waves form.
PaddleBlogs Diary of a Middle Aged Kayaker: In Search of a Lost Slalom Course
PaddleBlogs - I flew out to Slalom World Cup 4 last weekend in Markkleeburg in Germany in my role as sport psychologist with three British and Irish athletes. 30 years ago, such a trip would have been almost impossible, and not just because budget airlines didn’t exist, but because it would have meant travelling behind the ‘Iron Curtain’ to communist East Germany (DDR).
Jackson Kayak Sinking in West Virginia
Jackson Kayak - I missed out on sinking in a squirt boat last year when I moved to Virginia from Maine but didn’t miss out on kayaking. The James River was pumping last summer so I was OK but really missed going underwater until this summer I found a happy place in West Virginia.
Palm Blogs A Northern Norway Adventure
Palm Blogs - The last time I paddled in Norway was 2010. I had only been paddling a few years and looking back wasn’t ready to paddle the rivers I did. I ended up swimming more than I care to remember, some were rather unpleasant which resulted in a not so nice experience. This summer I returned with a few more years’ under my belt and hoping to enjoy paddling in Norway. The trip ended up being an amazing holiday, and it was great to see how much I had improved since 2010.

Jackson Kayak Swamp Fox
Jackson Kayak - A group from the Lowcountry Kayak Anglers decided to do a float and fishing day trip down the Lynches River from Lynches River Country Park for roughly 5 miles to the Highway 52 boat ramp. Starting at the park the Lynches River is considered a South Carolina Revolutionary River Trail that is 66 miles long. While the river trail seems to be a state or local trail the 66 mile stretch is actually a national recreational trail that flows through the cypress and tupelo laden stomping grounds of Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion.
Outdoor Industry Association California Leaves Us in Suspense
Outdoor Industry Association - In California, the nation’s largest recreation economy, still no Office of Outdoor Recreation. As the California legislature begins wrapping up the first half of a two-year session, AB 1111, the bill to create an office of outdoor recreation, has died in committee. The bill failed to come out of suspense while in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee, a procedural requirement for all bills with a fiscal note working their way through the legislature.
