Iowa’s First Whitewater Competition: Charles City Challenge: WhiteWater Weekend 2012
Charles City, Iowa - Paddlers from the Midwest and beyond are encouraged to mark their calendars for June 15-17, 2012, which will present them with the first opportunity to compete on Iowa’s first whitewater course! Registration is now open at ccwhitewater.com.
Charles City Challenge: WhiteWater Weekend is anticipated to become a premier annual whitewater event which will attract top canoe, kayak, and stand up paddleboard talent from across the United States and Canada. Events will include: kayak rodeo, kayak down river race, kayak boater cross, kayak best trick, SUP down river race, SUP attainment, SUP best surf, canoe down river race, and canoe best surf. Opportunities for open boating will also allow river enthusiasts of all skill levels to experience the course.
In addition to fun on the river, Saturday’s events will include: a disc golf tournament, dog jog, downtown farmers market with live entertainment, and vendors in Riverfront Park. Other weekend events will include special Friday evening entertainment with Charles City’s popular summer festivity, Party in the Park, in Central Park featuring live music by The Rude Band along with food and beverage vendors and activities for kids of all ages.
Charles City WhiteWater at Riverfront Park was designed by Recreation Engineering and Planning (REP) from Boulder, Colorado, who has designed approximately 80% of the whitewater courses built in the United States. The course encompasses 11 acres of water with three world-class whitewater features. The surrounding Riverfront Park includes 23 acres of land featuring: a handicap accessible boat launch, disc golf course, natural play area, amphitheatre, storm water fountain, labyrinth, and access to the community’s more than 5 miles of recreational trails.
Other competitions on the Cedar River in Charles City this summer will include the Iowa Games whitewater slalom competition on June 23 and a Buttercup slalom event on August 18.
