Sad story. 37 year old kite surfer killed by sharks about an hour from where I paddle. At first they thought it was a school of sharks, then considered that some juvenile Great Whites might be the culprits (yep--in Florida--crazy changing climate), but now it was probably one large Tiger or (most likely) a Bull Shark (zambezi). Really hit the water sports community here hard--it was like a personal blow. I do feel glad to have a boat around me. As has been said before--I'd never stop paddling because of it (I caught a wave for him in my kayak). I think a kayak does offer some protection a surf board doesn't. Not the little surf kayak you ride Adrian (not sure there's much protection there), but the river runner variety. Ya think?

Gee that's bad... Poor dude.

There have been a LOT of shark sightings here in Cape Town lately. I saw a large shark at Melkbos the other day which was weird, first time at that spot. This was a few days after a dude got killed swimming at Fish Hoek (also in Cape Town) I hit it today, was great - Melkbos, that is. See below:

A mate of mine was buzzed while bodyboarding at Caves last week. But Caves is quite sharky and there has been an attack there already. Pretty scary, his mates could see it from the road as it's high above.

Check out this video a mate of his took flying over False Bay the other day:

Sharks are often around us, we just don't see them. If it's your time and your card comes up then that's it. Nothing to really worry about. I wonder how many times a drunk driver has passed by on the other side and by luck he/she stayed in their lane. Same with sharks, don't worry about something you don't have control over. Anyway, enough talking nonsense. Have fun in the water!!! Tomorrow morning early I'll be back to enjoy the last of the big swell before the weekend turns down a bit.. :P

VERY well said, Adrian. Totally agree with you. I was out there again today. Saturday we have another cold front with strong winds. I can't wait. I have no death wish. But I'd rather die doing something I love (rather than end up in a nursing home down the road maybe having the stuffing kicked out of me by a nurses aid because I couldn't get across the floor in time to pooh in the toilet and not my pants). ;)

Here's a picture of the paddle-out for this guy. For those of you that don't know, a paddle out ceremony is a way water sports folk honor their dead. There is a kayaker and SUPers in the bunch. With this one--it didn't matter what type of water sportsman you were.
