I'd say you're onto it. Seeing he just terminated his sponsorship with Bliss-Stick for something new and exciting in 2009. I guess this is it.

Should be interesting. Especially given the current economic trends. I wonder, can the industry handle another kayak manufacturer? Of course, assuming this is what is about to happen and I'm only guessing now. Perhaps he'll concentrate on composite playboats only to keep overheads low. Going plastic requires a lot more cash for the equipment required to start up... Let's see. :)

Hmm, interesting :) . Perhaps he will start out with composite molds in stead of aluminium ones? I've heard that most companies (at least Jackson) use polyester to create molds for prototypes. On the cboats forum I once read that it is possible to make a few boats from a polyester mold so that way you could start building plastic boats without huge investment costs.

At least it will allow him to have some plastic demoboats.

But I do think it is a good thing to see people willing to start up new companies in economically challenging times. If only I'd have the balls to do that ;)

I think all companies make protos from fibreglass, I stand under correction of course. You can stick the mould in the oven and make between 5 and 7 protos before the mould breaks up from the heat. This is the standard route to create protos and work on a design, for most companies..

yes. pretty much everyone (probably an exception or two) prototype with composite molde
You only get a few boats out of them so not worth it for production

everyone asked, "can the market handle another boat company" when Jackson and DR came out

building an entirely new molding facility might be out of the question, but getting existing molding facilities to spin boats for you might be worth the risk for anthony (if that is indeed what he is doing). It has worked for DragorRossi and the partnership with Eurotank. Worked for Jackson. (don't know who spins their boats, but it's not in house). Worked for Liquid Logic starting out, and now that they have been bought/partnered with Zim and the factory he has going, they are a big closer to having their own factory, but not completely.

It will be interesting to hear how this progresses.

Very interesting, I didn't know that Jackson had their boats made by another company... Jackson have done incredibly well for themselves. They created a full range of boats in the beginning with zero proto types being made (no prizes for guessing how 'good' they were), got the best paddlers to paddle them and Bob's your uncle, everyone bought them. No doubt EJ has the best marketing out there, hands down. I suspect that no one else could have pulled that off other than EJ and we're sure not to see it again in the future.

Some full on surf kayaks with proper outfitting would be pretty cool to see on the market, but given Mr Yap's history I would think the time for composite playboats is on the door step. We should know soon, I'm sure... :cheer:

Well, let's see how it goes. He's an awesome boater with a big reputation so he'll have a following no doubt. Putting boats into production, setting up dealer networks, designing outfitting people like and all the little nitty gritty things are quite another thing. Let's see. I wish him luck, seems like a very cool dude. Good to see people out there who love the sport so much. From a business/market point of view I think he's really going to struggle. But that's just my little opinion anyway.. :silly:

On the www.titankayaks.com website, it states "an athlete based, high performance whitewater kayak company" and the picture looks like a fibreglass type of kayak. Maybe he saw that other thread on whether you could make carbon fibre style kayaks viable and going for it :P (Yes I'm sure he's just using fibre for testing his design, but nothing like starting some good rumours right?)

Since it says high performance, I would guess that the boats might be composite. The boat on the front page looks nearly identical to the RAD, with the addition of volume in the bow and stern. Don't know why they would put a composite boat on the front page if they plan on making plastic boats, because that would be extremely deceiving.

It wouldn't. Plastic boats require more processes/equipment/machinery to be made... ;)

I know I sound negative again, but "althete based" and "high performance" are two things which only appeal to a tiny fraction of your market. Most people kayaking are not althletes and wouldn't even know the difference between high and not-so-high performance. The trick is to appeal to the masses, and hence sell a lot of boats. To take it further, the real money is in recreational boating and that is the bread and butter for most kayaking manufacturing companies. But I guess money isn't high on his priorities.

It would be nice to hear from Anthony himself, here on the Playak forums... :)

Yes that's him. MANY professional kayakers are on Playak. But most choose just to lurk around under different names (sometimes) and not post. ;) It would probably benefit their overall image if they 'reached out' a little more to the people on the street, so to speak.

well in the kayak session interview it says he plans to move onto creekers later in the year, so it's fair to assume he'd use plastic for them....

it'd probably turn out as composite for prototypes and team boats, and use plastic for creekers and regular playboats.
