Jun 14 Social NRS FB “The hippies and the rednecks need to come together and figure this stuff out.” Garrett Eaton splits his time between guiding in Desolation Canyon, Utah and the oil fields of North Dakota. His double life raises eyebrows at both of his places of work, but it’s how he feeds his family and heals his heart. Jun 13 Social NRS FB This Wild & Scenic Wednesday was requested by Float Eureka: The Buffalo River, AR (Wild & Scenic circa 1992) 1. In the 1960s there was a strong push to dam the Buffalo River. Instead, Senators J. William Fulbright and John L. McClellan introduced the Buffalo National River park legislation in 1967, and the river became the first national river in the United States in 1972. Today, it’s one of the most popular attractions in Arkansas, averaging 800,000 annual visitors. 2. Paleo-Indians inhabited the Ozark region roughly 10,000 years ago. European and American settlers reached the river by the early 1800s. Today, old homesteads and structures are still standing throughout the Buffalo River area. 3. Located in the Ozark hills, the W&S portion of the Buffalo River flows 16 miles from its headwaters through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness to the boundary of the Ozark National Forest and is characterized by dramatic terrain, uneven, sharp ridges and cliffs with significant vertical ...

Jun 11 Social NRS FB I remember this one time on the river.. 'It started with a mama bear and her cub. It was 8 am on a Wednesday morning in May. We were rigging up for a three-day trip through Hells Canyon on the Snake River. This wasn't my first multi-day trip, but it had been a stressful week building up to the launch. I wasn't fully prepared. Not mentally. Not in my inbox. It was hard to hit the unplug. And then those two bears came barreling down the canyon for a morning dip. We were busy throwing bags on boats. But at this moment, we all stopped. River time kicked in and we watched the bears for 10 minutes. For the next three days the only things that mattered were which lines we took through the rapids, where to stop for lunch, for camp, and most importantly, how to turn the strangers in the group into friends. Rivers will do all that.' - #NRS Digital Content Manager Ashley Peel As part of the 50th Anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, we're celebrating rivers all year long. Share your ...

Call in sick and rally the crew, we'll see you down south!

Jun 7 Social NRS FB The ability to run more difficult whitewater really trickles down to the basic skills you learned back when you mastered that Class III run. The only difference is instead of using one skill at a time, expert paddlers can dissect a new or unfamiliar rapid into familiar parts, identify the skills necessary to style each part and link the skills together into a seamless flow from start to finish. Part two of the Cadence Series delves deeper into this concept of deconstruction and reassembly.
Jun 6 Social NRS FB Every Wild and Scenic River has what’s called a Comprehensive River Management Plan (CRMP) that dictates how it’s managed and protected. Montana's Flathead River, one of the rivers that inspired the writing of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, is beginning to update its CRMP for the next several decades. On this #WildAndScenicWednesday learn how you can be involved in the writing of the Flathead's next chapter. Your Forests Your Future | #5000MilesOfWild
Jun 6 Social NRS FB Fun facts for this Wild & Scenic Wednesday were researched and written by the Western Rivers Conservancy: Fossil Creek, AZ (Wild & Scenic circa 2009) 1. Fossil Creek is one of only two Wild and Scenic Rivers in all of Arizona. 2. For nearly 100 years, Fossil Creek was drained almost completely dry by a hydroelectric project. You’d never know it today. Thanks to the most successful river recovery effort in the Southwest, Fossil Creek was restored and is as stunning and healthy as ever. 3. Fossil Creek gets its name from the high levels of calcium in the water that form travertine (limestone) fossils on just about everything in the creek, creating rounded, odd-looking formations and spectacular aquamarine pools. 4. Nine native fish species inhabit Fossil Creek, making it the longest river reach in Arizona where native fish live completely free of invasive fish species (which were all removed). 5. Fossil Creek is an important cultural site for the Yavapai-Apache people, who ...
