A man about to set out for a kayak paddle at the Splitrock Reservoir in Rockaway Twp. is pictured here. A deal has been finalized to preserve the land around the body of water.

State police resumed the search for the kayaker who went missing in Splitrock Reservoir on Memorial Day.

The reservoir was closed off Monday after a witness saw a kayak floating upside down in the water, said New Jersey State Trooper Alejandro Goez.

Goez said the search is now a recovery effort, and the investigation is being classified as a missing person.

The kayaker is a male, but his identification is unknown, Goez added.

Boonton's fire chief said they had received a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. on Monday asking them to assist Rockaway Township officials with the initial search.
