FAIRBANKS - Alaska State Troopers have called off the search for an overdue kayaker reported missing after he self-reported his location in the village of Minto to authorities on Friday.
Sean Murphy, 36, launched a single-seat kayak from the boat ramp on Chena Small Tracts Road July 6 and was reported overdue on July 10.
He was reported to have been seen in Nenana on July 11, but efforts to locate him failed, despite an air search. On Friday afternoon, Murphy contacted troopers to let them know he's all right and shared future travel plans, according to Sgt. Lucas Altepeter.
"It sounds like he's out recreating ... he's aware of what he's doing and acknowledges there's certain risks involved," Altepeter said, adding, "We have no reason to think he's in any danger or he's in need of any assistance."
